The two companies signed a turnkey contract for the build of a 24,000-ton land-based farm, its first phase intended to produce 7,500 tons of salmon. The technology in the station is a mixed through-flow system that ensures best water quality with minimal interventions.

GeoSalmo and Artec Aqua started out their collaboration with a pre-design phase followed by a phase of concept engineering. Now the companies have entered the detail engineering phase, marking the last phase of the project before construction.

The kick-off meeting for the detail engineering phase was a two-day event held in Reykjavik and in attendance were several people from both GeoSalmo and Artec Aqua as well as participants from Sweco, SMJ, Norconsult, VSÓ, Brunahönnun and Nordic/Arkthing. The group ended the first day with an on-site visit in Þorlákshöfn to see the plot.

Constructions on the plot will start early this summer and Artec Aqua will start their construction phase in the fall. The site will be equipped with the most advanced equipment available to control temperature and water quality, ensuring the growth and well-being of the fish in conditions that in many ways reflect their natural environment. All tanks will be covered, which ensures complete control of the breeding process and thus unprecedented stability and quality. GeoSalmo will build a harvest facility next to the farming site so that it will be possible to pump the fish directly to the harvesing in a low-stress manner.

Artec Aqua has already started the dialogue with several Icelandic contractors and service providers to be involved in the project. In this way new knowledge and experience will be built up in Iceland, which can be used for the rapidly growing industry that land-based salmon farming is aiming to become in the coming years in Iceland.
